Budding designers in the Favelas ~ these girls have style!!
During my time in Rio I stumbled across a wonderful little project that may possibly be the start of a great new partnership for Planeterra.
It is a story of four young entrepreneurs from the Favelas - Silvia, Fátima, Daniella and Luciana who started their own small business using an innate sense of style, creativity and desire to give back to the people of their community. These girls use scraps of cloth, plastic bottles and whatever reusable or recyclable materials they can find to make stylish clothes, bags, flip flops, earrings and other accessories.
The Favela has donated the space for these young women to work at the community center and in turn they are providing workshops free to all women from their community who are interested in sewing and design in order that they too create conditions to generate their own incomes as well.
While visiting this project I saw that their work tables were covered in clippings from all kinds of magazines to give them ideas and inspiration. So when I asked them if there was anything that they might need in order to help improve their business, 1) clients would be one and 2) sewing machines the other.

So with the possible development of a brand new voluntour for Gap Adventures in Rio we may be able to incorporate a visit to the project, bringing in visitors to meet the girls & giving them an opportunity to purchase items directly from their workshop. With more income these girls will be able to afford the sewing machines that they need to grow their business and provide training to more women in their community.
