Peru Flood Relief Update - A Community Gets to Work

It's been over a year now since the horrible rains devastated the Ccaccaccollo community where the women of our weaving project and many Gap Adventures Inca Trail porters reside. This note is to provide you all an update on how they are doing and progress on the construction of the community centre. Sometimes community development seems like it takes forever, as there are often delays and changes in decisions before projects get implemented (imagine working on a project with 200 of your closest…See More

What one determined high school can do

I’ve been here in Matapalo for a day and a half, coordinating with the school new activities and projects we hope to support going forward. If you’ve ever seen a proactive, creative and forward thinking school, this is it.A visionary teacher, Maria Isabel Ramirez, sees how the various activities of the school can be integrated into tourism. Colegio Matapalo is a technical school, so in addition to regular academic classes, students learn practical skills. In rural Costa Rica this means…See More

Watching a master potter at work

Planeterra believes in supporting micro-enterprise. As a community of travellers who love to experience what life is like as a local, there’s nothing more interesting than watching a person work away with passion at their craft. In Nicaragua there is a creative culture, artists who paint beautiful landscapes, and potters who create masterpieces out of the clay found right beneath their feet. I had the privilege to meet a master potter, Don Pedro of San Juan del Oriente, outside of Granada. Don…See More

Loved my year at EARTH. A very eventful year with some very engaged people - from the staff and students. Such a beautiful place with so much biodiversity. Did you see green macaws??

Spanish Lessons and Volunteering? A cool combo

Learning Spanish on location is always the best idea. From my experience, after taking classes for several years, I wasn’t able to have a conversation, conduct a meeting, or talk on the phone, until after a few months of immersion. One of the best things about some Spanish schools these days is that they are taking the opportunity to help out nearby community development projects by providing volunteer activities for their students.

Libraries on wheels - reaching out in Nicaragua

There is a lady named Jane in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, and she is anything but plain. This lady is busy. She lives half time in Colorado and goes back and forth to meet groups of Library Science students who go down to Nicaragua to help out in the library(s) she founded. Nicaragua didn't have a culture of book-lending in libraries and she noticed when she pulled out a book that kids would naturally run to her and want to read, or hear a story. Thus began her journey into voluntourism and… Continue
